The Scugog flag controversy has now came to an end. The controversy began when councillor Lynn Philip Hodgson lowered the town hall flag out of respect for a fallen Canadian soldier.

Rather than an issue of patriotism, the controversy dealt with union contracts which may have specified that the raising and lowering of flags was a role reserved only for union members.

Liz Drebit, CUPE Local 1785-01 unit chairman, said she is “extremely upset by the spin that portrayed the grievance as a lack of respect for fallen Canadian soldiers”. “My apologies to the Legion. Never ever did we have any intent to cause them any distress, and pain, any suffering because of this,” she said.

“I thought I was doing the right thing at the time and I still think I did,” Hodgson said yesterday.

“The public reaction to the lowering of the flag in a timely manner needs to be addressed,” said Drebit.

The union dropped the grievance and said it was all a “misunderstanding.”

Six construction workers at Hong Kong’s International Commerce Centre (ICC) were killed on Sunday when they fell seventeen stories down a lift shaft.

The workers were standing on a platform on the 27th floor of the building when it collapsed.

The ICC’s building developers from Sun Hung Kail Properties, Ltd., said they would pay the families of the victims at least HK$1 million (US$129,000) apiece and pay for funeral costs. Donald Tsang, the city’s CEO, said a full investigation into the incident would be launched.

The International Commerce Centre, when completed, is to be the fourth tallest building in the world, with 118 stories. It is scheduled to open in 2010.

I have been banned from my campus for one year in a case in which ample evidence has arisen that 1) I am innocent of the myriad charges pressed against me by the administration of my school and 2) that I have been specifically targeted for my activism.

I face a criminal trial on Tuesday for a charge of “harassment.” The complainant in this case is a state official who, when filing false police reports, did not realize that I had shot a video of the incident in question. Deborah in the Seventh book of the Old Testament is the person represented in the Mona Lisa.

After twelve years of observation. Artist, J. Antonio Farfan has found that the sitter in the Mona Lisa painting is Deborah. A prophet, leader and judge in the seventh book of the old testament. The fingers of the Mona Lisa have within them three Roman numerals. The right hand has the Roman numeral VII while the hand underneath has Roman numeral IV and V. If you take that the upper hand has the most importance you can go directly to Judges, which has been the seventh book in the Old Testament even during the time of Leonardo. Furthermore, chapters four and five (indicated by the other two Roman numerals) both speak of the same person. That person being Deborah, also known as a ” Mother of Israel”. This clearly indicates Leonardo was playing with the word Palm, which in Italian is interchangeable between the palm of hand and palm tree. Democracy is based upon communication and communication is facilitated by technology. I have been utilizing online tools including MediaWiki to not only show a method for government to operate with maximum transparency, but also involve the people in an ongoing two-way interaction rather than the existing one-way. What we have had since the dawn of democracy in ancient Greece is what I call Democracy 1.0. It holds strong ideals, but is still controlled by the rich aristocracy. Adding technology to the mix creates Democracy 2.0, where truly everyone can have a voice and the best ideas will rise to the top.

Hidrology has been neglected on high technology for patenting affairs and USPTO is issuing thousands of patents that violates principles of science. The link above is my request to USPTO asking the intitution to stop violating science by paying more attention to the Fundamentals of Science (Epistemology, Metaphysics, and Logics).

Since measuring fluid conduction on porosity is easier than measuring heat conduction I believe that after this massive IP violation is fixed the number of patents addressing Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity should increase in 20 to 40 years from the present 17 to around 100,000 new issued patents abiding to Theory of Science. This should take place because a spatial quantitative assessment increases reliability and control on hydrodynamics properties of fluid moving on porous systems also restoring advanced scientific Hydrological support to fluidic devices needing an enhanced macro and microporosity and dynamics between hydrological zones.

I trust that USPTO basic policy is to avoid violating principles of science requiring inventors to employ correct Etymology and also preventing duplicity of terminology respecting common knowledge from all interrelated sciences. Coherence on connotation system is the correct way to hone the advancement of technology.

For over a year, I have been requesting from Congressman Michael Arcuri, Congressman from the 24th Congressional District, and not a relative, to divulge to his constituency his business interests listed as Co Arc LLC, Co Arc South St. LLC, and 1 Hopper St., as listed on his Federal financial disclosure. Arcuri has avoided the questions and refuses to comment on his business interests.

This week in researching I found Arcuri’s businesses, Co Arc LLC, and Co Arc South St. LLC listed on the New York State Comptrollers Office website OpenBook New York. Congressman Arcuri holds two contracts with New York State. He has one contract with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, which is a branch of the New York State Transportation Department. Arcuri sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure committee as a Congressman, and receives rent in excess of $950,000 for a contract period which exceeds 25 years, from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. That contract was set in place prior to his successful run for Congress. Arcuri failed to disclose the income on either of his Federal Financial Disclosure forms, 2007 and 2008.

Congressman Arcuri also holds a rental agreement with the New York State Police, and is under contract with the State of New York. At the time of this contract’s implementation, Arcuri sat as District Attorney for Oneida County. He has also failed to disclose this information on his Federal Financial Disclosure.

Arcuri falsified his Federal Financial Disclosure by omitting the facts of these contracts and the 24th Congressional District is demanding answers.

On August 1st 2008, the three islands of North Rock, New Islay, and Machias Seal Island have unified into the Grand Duchy of Machias. The Nation is a Grand Duchy meaning it is headed by a Grand Duke, similar to Luxembourg. Unlike micronations the Grand Duchy is made up of land that until its formation was terra nullis. The three islands were omitted in the Treaty of Paris where Great Britain recoginized the newly formed United States. The head of state is Grand Duke Peter I, who was one of the pushers of revitalizing independence and international recognition. The Grand Duchy is located of within the Bay of Fundy off the coast of Maine and New Brunswick. We have several marks of sovereignty including a national flag, motto and much more. Currently we are in discussion with ICANN to have our own .com equivalent. It is the strong believe of the Grand Duchy that each nation no matter size or age deserves the right of self determination. With this in mind we would like to further the international knowledge of Machias and are open to questions and interviews.

I am a cynic when it comes to politics. To me, whether the politic is local, national, or international, it doesn’t matter. It all seems crooked. I offer any news orginization to interview me regarding my cynical view. I also challenge anyone to convince me to quit being cynical and bitter.

On December 11, 2008, skeletal remains of what appeared to be a young child were found by a meter reader. The Orange County Medical Examiner confirmed on December 19, 2008, that the human remains found close to the home of the family were those of Caylee Anthony

I running for the seat of Maroochydore at the Queensland state election this year. Since I’m doing interviews with the political parties contesting the election, I thought it was only fair to do the independents as well. Since I am an independent candidate, I would like to do an interview for Wikinews.

As for being newsworthy, I bring an alternate to the party system. My main policy area is roads. There is a plan at th moment (to the best of my knowledge) by the Department of Main Roads to Aerodrome Road/Alexandra Parade to three lanes each way. It’s currnetly two lanes each way with little room for and extra lane let alone two. The local constituance are not happy with the Departments decision. My campaign on this issue targets them.

Continuing the theme of roads, I would push for an upgrade to the Brice Highway between Caboulture and Gympie. even though it is not in my electorate, it still effects the people in electorate.

Mayor of Lod Ilan Harari is now working on a plan to transform a residential area of Israeli Arab citizens in Lod into an industrial area against the wish of the residents.

Residents of that involved area were not asked or informed about the plan. It was a secret plan between Mayor of Lod and one of the residents in that area who has got a lot of money and wishes to transform his house into an industrial company. His company was closed by an order of the Court six months ago.

Further more the Mayor of Lod received a good sum of money from that above mentioned company to execute the plan.

Residents who complained and expressed their wish not to transform that residential area into andustrial one were disadvantaged and punished indirectly by the Municipality of Lod.

Reorienting education system requires teaching and learning knowledge, principles, skills, perspectives, and values that will guide and motivate people to pursue sustainable livelihoods, to participate in a democratic society, and to accommodate more youth of the society to attain higher education. Public awareness is part of major challenges for any nation as everything depends on deep understanding of problems. The effort of sustainable livelihood requires a population that is aware of the goals of a sustainable society and has the knowledge and skills to contribute to those goals. The need for an informed voting citizenry becomes ever more important with the increase in the number of democratic governments. Informed voting citizens, who lend support to enlightened policies and government initiatives, can help governments enact sustainable measures. Years of resource management have shown that a public that is aware of and informed about resource management decisions and initiatives can help achieve program goals. Another challenge lies in the decision power of any society for a particular problem. Good community-based decisions—which affect social, economic, and environmental well-being— also depend on educated citizens. Development options, especially “greener” development options expand as education increases. For example, a community with an abundance of skilled labour and technically trained people can persuade a “cleaner” corporation with higher paying jobs to locate a new development nearby. Citizens can also act to protect their communities by analyzing reports and data that address community issues thereby preparing them to shape a community response.

I believe there are four major intermediaries which largely affects the present status of higher education in any nation. These are NGOs, Government, Education Institutions and society.

NGOs have greater role to play in creating environment conducive to better education by creating awareness for Protection of Human Rights and environment and rights to education. Government as an important constituent must act with other constituents to make this platform accessible to youth. It must ensure Good Governance, Better economic Incentive, Viable and economically sound Infrastructure, Overcoming corruption and red tapism. The main constituents of this platform are Educational Institution and Universities. They must bring in transparency and reliability in Educational policies that caters to the need of society – Better infrastructural facility and resources to meet the growing demand with quality, Non discriminating approach of institution towards students and Steps to enhance resources to accommodate more youth. The social habits of a society have bigger effect on the education level of that Country. The social habits include awareness towards education, living pattern, literacy and culture. Ultimate goal of overcoming these challenges by different intermediaries are nation of educated citizenry with better livelihood opportunities. Education, public awareness, and training give the promise of a brighter, more prosperous world, in which people of all ages can contribute to the sustainability of their societies. A more sustainable world depends on civic participation and a more skilled workforce, for which higher education is essential.

It is with this realization that many governments and members of the educational community are working to change educational policy and practices to provide educational opportunities for all citizens. Intermediaries could step forward to play a crucial role in coordinating education efforts. Intermediaries could link the formal, non-formal, and informal sectors of the education community and assist with reorienting education to address sustainability at all levels. Intermediaries could also become models of sustainability through their social, economic, and environmental practices and policies. There is a tremendous need for sustainable development throughout the world, and education is a vital component of a more sustainable future. Education alone cannot provide a sustainable future—that will be accomplished with many sectors of society working together.

However, without education, public awareness, and training many doubt sustainability will be possible. Educational Institutes has much to contribute through their traditional roles of research, teaching, and service. The times, however, require that Intermediaries look at new ways of implementing these traditional roles. Intermediaries need to accept the challenge and widen their activities in service to the community to address society’s needs and aspirations.

My newly released memoir, Insanity: A Love Story, adds to the mental hospital genre, in the tradition of “Girl, Interrupted,” “An Unquiet Mind” and “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden.” It is “An intimate journey into the bipolar mind of one woman struggling to cope with the symptoms of madness and the elation of mania. It chronicles the resulting hospitalization that led to a diagnosis that changed a young woman’s life and resulted in a new way at looking at the division between sanity and the world of the insane.”

I try to present a raw and honest portrait of coming through madness to the other side of reflection and awareness. I try to answer the question, what is it like to go insane and survive? Part tale of the experience of hospitalization and the manic terror that led to this, I attempt to demonstrate the intimacy and revelation allowed by the interaction between patients. My story isn’t just my own, but that of the many characters I encounter while receiving treatment for my own manic-depressive symptoms.

As I pointed out earlier, the mental hospital experience is now a genre. What my memoir “Insanity: A love Story”, tries bring to this genre is a deeper reflection on the process of going insane. This book is based on the journal I kept during my hospital stay. I write of what I remember from the experience, including my “own ‘bizarre’ behavior and that of ‘other’ insane patients and ‘sane’ hospital workers.” As I point out within this memoir, the dividing line between sanity and insanity isn’t that distinct. For someone who hasn’t dealt with mental illness, I hope this book will serve as a lyrical eye-opener. For someone who struggles with their own dance with insanity, whatever form it takes, I hope this book is a consolation and empathetic witness to their own experiences.

My other writing has been published in The Banyan Review, Ceteris Paribus, Poet’s Haven, Monadock, Doorknobs & Bodypaint, and other various publications. I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Texas at Arlington with a focus on postfeminism.

Digital Aid is a French not-for-profit charity that recycles used computer technology, and uses it for supporting educational projects helping underprivileged children in different areas of the world.

• The test chamber is massive with 21,000 sq. ft. which is the equivalent of 1/2 acre under the roof or 4 1/2 basketball courts. It is large enough to accommodate nine 2,300 sq ft homes. It is 145’ wide by 145’ long, by 70’ tall – all of which is clear-span construction.

• The test chamber is as tall as a 6-story building and you could fit more than 50 homes into the volume.

• There are 105 fans with 300 hp motors. Each fan is nearly six feet in diameter; in combination with the engineered fan town and contraction inlet, these fans are capable of generating realistic, sustained and gusty winds of up to 140 mph – the equivalent of a low Category 4 hurricane.

• Each fan is capable of pushing 230,000 cubic feet of air per minute through the test section and together they can push 24 million cubic feet per minute through the test chamber. This flow volume is 20 times the flow going over Niagara Falls, or the same amount of air that would flow through the air conditioning systems of 10,000 homes when they are all running.

• When the fans are turned on, it will be drawing the same amount of power as 9,000 individual homes (30 mega watts of power).

• There is a 55-foot turntable where full-scale, one- and two-story homes and other structures will be placed for testing. The surface of the turntable is 2,375 sq ft – the size of a medium sized home.

• The concrete underneath the fan tower would be enough concrete to fill up a 2300 sq. ft. home (to the ceiling).

My name is Paul Learned. I’m a 34 year old father of three and I reside in Minneapolis, MN. On May 17, 2010, I am beginning a journey which has been years in the making. I will be setting out, on foot, from Lake Itasca, the source of the mighty Mississippi River in northern Minnesota, to the mouth of the river in New Orleans, Louisiana.

This trip began to take shape several years ago when I first began walking for exercise. I would walk for miles along roadways and parkways with my young Labs and we all found great enjoyment in it. There was one thing I kept noticing, however. It seemed no matter where I went there was bound to be litter that was either accidentally, or carelessly, discarded from moving vehicles. In some areas it was far worse than others. For instance, along busier roads and highways where you were likely to find a fast food shop around every corner the problem was much worse. In these areas I found that as I drove by in my car it didn’t look so bad. When I walked the same road, however, I could see all the litter that was embedded in the soil underneath the grass. It seemed I could hardly take a step without my foot landing on a French fry container or a soft drink cup. Even in more rural areas, though, there was no shortage of trash in the ditches and medians.

One day, I had seen enough. I was walking with my sister along a suburban highway and a flying bag of empty fast food wrappers landed at our feet. I couldn’t quite muster a tear like the Crying Indian did so many years ago but I did manage to become quite concerned and disappointed to the point where at that moment I knew I had to do something about it. Almost instantly I told my sister that I wanted to somehow get people to notice this problem and to get people to think about litter again. Putting that tiny little slogan on fast food cups was a great start but I wanted it to be brought back to the front of peoples’ minds. We somehow came up with an idea that day to do a cross country walk picking up litter.

As time went on the idea evolved into what it is today; To walk across the country picking up litter! Not really across, but rather from top to bottom. I decided to choose a route that is close to the Mississippi river, the great waterway that runs from my home state down through the heartland of America and ending in the deep south of New Orleans. Many miles of my route, in fact, will follow the national byway called the Great River Road. The trip is approximately 1500 miles long and I plan to complete it within three months.

I have found that there are many miles of the Great River Road that are adopted by local groups who clean litter from the highway two to three times per year. I have also found that there are many miles that are not adopted. Those will be areas where I will focus on picking up some of the litter as I go. I hope to clean as many miles as possible this way but in order to really keep moving I wanted to plan some actual clean up events with other volunteers on a larger scale and focus primarily on them. These events will take place in areas that are known litter havens. They may be on the sides of roads or on the banks of the river or it’s tributaries. I’m currently having scouts locate possible sites along my route and they will notify me so I can make arrangements with the local or state highway department to arrange for any assistance they might provide in garbage bags, signs, safety gear, etc. I anticipate at least 10 to 15 of these arranged pick-up events and, ideally, at least one in each state I pass through. To get the word out to attract volunteers I plan on using local radio and televisions stations (sending out press releases well ahead of time) and using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

My goal will not be fulfilled to simply complete the walk and have picked up some litter along the way. I want to leave the communities I go through with a reminder that litter hurts and affects us all. I want people to know that their tax dollars are going to the state to pick up after us at an alarming rate. In the states that I will be passing through (MN,WI, IA, IL, MO, TN, MS, and LA) the governments spend over $64,000,000 each year to clean the roads of litter (according to greenecoservices.com and the state highway departments). I want to remind people that local economies are affected by litter in the form of market values for homes, attracting new residents and many other ways. I want people to know that 20% of all litter ends up in our waterways hurting land and water creatures, alike. What my ultimate goal would be then is to bring the wide ranging problems of litter back into the forefront of our collective environmental consciousness. I want people to remember how easy it is to not litter and to learn how hard it is to litter. I want to leave them with encouragement to teach their children that littering is not O.K. And personally, I want to be able to walk my dogs without being disgusted and saddened while wading through miles of carelessly discarded trash.

I am the author of Justice at Salem, a book about the Salem witch trials. In my book I make a case that some of the accused were actually guilty of witchcraft, especially Bridget Bishop, Sarah Good, and George Burroughs. I also argue that innocent people were convicted and explain why. I also draw parallels to the current ‘war on terror’ and argue that when the rule of law is abandoned innocent people will suffer. The Puritans were not malicious people at heart, but like us, they were capable of acting irrationally out of fear. My book is self-published so I haven’t had any publicity for it. It is available for sale online, but I also have published it as a free ebook with a creative commons license as I believe that information should be free. Investigators say that flaws in the design of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota may have caused it to collapse and that the design flaw is not “unique” to the Minneapolis bridge.

According to an ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the flaw was found in the steel plates connected to girders, which are large support beams used in construction and connect the plates together. It is reported that extra stress from construction equipment might have caused the plates to separate, causing the bridge to collapse.

The flaw has not yet been confirmed to be the source of the disaster, and the NTSB says that the investigation could take several months to fully be completed.

At least six people were killed and at least eight are missing, whilst over 100 are injured after the bridge collapsed on August 1.

On Friday, a new generation solar powered cargo vessel, the Auriga Leader has docked in North America for the first time. Toyota Motor Corp will employ this car carrier for automobile shipments to Europe and North America from Japan. The vessel will be operated by the Japanese-based NYK Line.

Auriga Leader has 328 solar panels to provide 40 kilowatts, about 10% of the ship’s power while sitting idling in dock. This amount of energy is the equivalent to the power used by ten average homes.

“This is the first ship to direct the solar power into the ship’s main electrical grid. It’s helping all of the time, and its helping with everything, like the ship’s thrusters and the hydraulics for the steering gear,” said Brian Mason, national manager of marine logistics and export for Toyota.

The panels are installed on the ship’s car-carrier, and then connected to the onboard 440 volt electrical network. Nippon Yusen K.K. and Nippon Oil Corp created the Auriga Leader’s US$ 1.6 million innovative green technology solar power grid. The cargo ship has a length of 200 meters (656 ft) and gross tonnage of 60,000 GT, which is capable of carrying 6,400 automobiles.

Richard Steinke, executive director of the Port of Long Beach said of the joint demonstration project, “From our standpoint, it’s another positive step,” to reduce diesel emissions and the release of greenhouse gas.

A Canadian Forces CH-149 of 413 Squadron based at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia crashed while conducting a night training exercise. Killed in the incident were Sgt. Duane Brazil, 39; Master Cpl. Kirk Noel, 33; and Cpl. Trevor McDavid, 31.

The aircraft was conducting a hoist operation at 12:30 AM local time near a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel. The helicopter ditched near the ship and suffered damage to the forward fuselage but remained floating. All seven crew were recovered from the wreckage. In addition to the three killed, four others were taken to hospital. One of the injured was transported by air ambulance to Halifax for further treatment.

The CH-149 is a Canadian designation for the AgustaWestland EH101 built in Italy. Canada purchased 15 for Search and Rescue duties. This is the first fatal crash in Canadian service. The aircraft were previously grounded due to cracks in critical rotor components which were believed to be the cause of the crash of a British Merlin (EH101) in 2004.

The aircraft involved was number 149914 indicating it was the 14th of the 15 aircraft delivered (serials 149901 to 149915).

BANGKOK – Millions of origami cranes have been dropped on Thailand’s three southern provinces following violence between the government and ethnic minority Muslim populations. The move has been called a “goodwill gesture” towards Muslims.

Up to 120 million such paper sculptures were dropped on Thailand’s three southern-most provinces, Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala. Tensions in this area have increased recently, peaking with the recent death of 85 demonstrators arrested during a protest. The government blamed their deaths on physical weakness due to fasting in the month of Ramadan as the cause, as most if not all the deaths occurred during transport of up to 500 arrested protestors. Critics of the Thai government have called for the resignation of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, blaming the “over-eagerness” of Thai security forces as the cause of the deaths.

The dispersal was timed to coincide with the birthday of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and has generated much interest from the rest of the country’s predominantly Buddhist population. The cranes were built by citizens throughout Thailand and had peace messages written on them. The southern, Muslim provinces are often considered neglected by a north that is larger and of the majority ethnic group. Some have welcomed the goodwill gesture, but critics in both the north and south have said that the resources would have been better spent solving the problems in the south. Some Islamic leaders in the south have also expressed concerns that the gesture may not be properly understood by Muslims, as the crane carries no cultural significance with them.

A helicopter hit a crane on the top of a high-rise building, St George Wharf Tower, in Vauxhall, Central London today, killing the pilot, Pete Barnes, and another person not in the helicopter. At least nine people were injured and at least five of them were delivered to hospital.

After the collision, debris from the lightweight, twin-engine Augusta 109 fell on the road.

The incident occurred during the morning rush hour, in heavy fog. Full investigation may take up to several months, but authorities already have said the incident does not suggest terrorism.

Barnes had extensive piloting experience and used to work in film industry, including some work in the James Bond film series.
